I visited the Azores for the first time this April from Madrid and fell in love with the island of Sao Miguel. People from the U.S. love to describe the Azores or Madeira as the “Hawai’i of Europe” but the island is truly stunning and unlike anywhere I’ve been before. It doesn’t hurt that this island is fairly “undiscovered” (not to sound like Christopher Columbus) but I was impressed by how small the crowds were! There are so many reasons to visit the Azores right now and that’s just one of them.
Colombia was one of my favorite countries to figure out while backpacking. I spent a month and a half there in January – February 2022 for a total of 44 days. There are an endless amount of things to do in Colombia from beautiful beaches to hikes and deserts and islands. I started in Medellin and bused down to the Coffee Triangle and visited Salento (which is the town that inspired Encanto!) and Jardin, and then back to Guatape, and flew to Cartagena, and explored all along the northern coast such as Isla Rosario, Taganga, Santa Marta, into the La Guajira desert and back.
I spent over a month backpacking Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru each so this is the beginning of a series where I give a detailed itinerary of countries I have backpacked solo. Since I had to learn these routes along the way, I wanted to make it easier for you to figure out. I already have…

After backpacking all around Mexico for 3 months and staying almost exclusively in hostels, I’ve picked out the best hostels to stay in different parts of Mexico. They are all super backpacker and budget friendly for under $25 a night (some even under $15) and good for working from home or studying. I always book…
My first time hearing about Valladolid was when I got to Tulum. I would say it’s a lesser known city in Mexico and it’s known for its cenotes. Valladolid is around an hour away from Tulum. For some background, Valladolid was a Mayan town named Zaci but was named after the previous capital of Spain,…
